MARGAO: The work of draining out water from contaminated drinking water wells in the Sirvodem ward of Margao Municipal Council commenced on Friday, even as the Margao Urban Health centre despatched the water samples from the wells for testing.
The work of pumping out the contaminated water from wells that were emitting foul smell began this morning. Around 20 wells are believed to have been hit by the water contamination and the authorities are awaiting the report from the health centre for further action.
Margao Urban Health Officer Dr Sanjay Dalvi told Herald that the health officials have asked the residents not to use the water for human consumption for the time being. “We have asked the residents not to use the water for consumption as a matter of abundant caution,” he said, adding that the water sample testing report should hopefully be ready by early next week.
Meanwhile, Margao BJP leader Sharmad Raiturcar has lamented that the work on the underground sewerage line in the Sirvodem ward has been dragging on now for the last 3-4 years. “If the work had been completed on time, all households would have been connected to the underground line by now,” he said.
