MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council will now collect coconut shells from restaurants and caterers in the town and also the discarded halves of tender coconuts from vendors across Margao.
MMC has tied up with the managing committee of the Hindu crematorium, which will use these coconut shells and discarded halves of tender coconuts. The base of the funeral pyre at the crematorium is prepared by using material like coconut shells and husk and hence the discarded tender coconut halves fit the bill.
“The restaurant owners and caterers find it difficult to dispose the coconut shells and generally the tender coconut water sellers dump the discarded waste at an isolated spot, causing an eyesore and nuisance,” said MMC CO Siddhivinayak Naik.
The council, he said will conduct a survey to identify the tender coconut water sellers and meet them as to when to collect their discarded tender coconut halves and similarly with the restaurant owners as well.
