PANJIM: Goa State Human Rights Commission (GSHRC) has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Principal Chief Engineer of PWD following a complaint by human rights activist and advocate Satish Sonak regarding violation of human rights due to non-working lifts in Junta House, Panjim.
“The Junta House lifts are often not in working condition and their safety is in doubt and a number of times the lifts have suddenly stopped thereby causing sudden panic and suffocation to the people inside the lift,” Sonak said.
“If the non-maintenance continues serious accidents will take place wherein human life will be endangered,” he said.
Stating that the PWD Chief Engineer is responsible for maintenance of Junta House and inter alia and it is his duty to ensure that the lifts are always maintained in proper and working condition. “There have been time and again reports coming in the papers about the non- working of the first lift and the hardship faced by the people but nothing needful has been done therefore the suffering of the citizens continues,” he added.
He demanded that a show-cause notice be directed to the respondents that is PWD and Chief Secretary as to why the lift no 1 in Junta House is non operational for the last several months and they be directed to file a report on safe worthiness and working condition of all lifts in Junta House to the GSHRC and also demand that the lifts should be immediately repaired.
