…and this choked drain is another story

Shop owner Abdulmatin Carol has drawn the MMC officials’ attention to the clogged drain in the New Market, claiming that it has not been cleaned for years now

MARGAO: Will the government’s Swachh Bharat Nital Goem programme launched on Thursday with much fanfare offer hope to this trader, who has been running from pillar to post to get a storm water drain choked with sewage repaired in Margao’s new market for over a year now.
As Margao Municipal Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello and the civic babus descended on the New Market on Thursday as part of the Swachh Bharat Nital Goem programme, shop owner Abdulmatin Carol drew the civic officials’ attention to the clogged drain, claiming that it has not been cleaned for years now.
Carol later told the media that the civic body has failed to repair the storm water drain choked with sewage and waste water. “In the absence of repair work, the waste water enters my shop and creates a nuisance. This has been going on for months now. I had visited the municipality umpteen number of times, but in vain”, Matin said.
Replying to a question, Matin said he has drawn the attention of the Chief Officer regarding the menace, but he has not given any assurance on repairing the drain.
