MARGAO: Plastic and other waste were strewn all over the old market area as the eight-day fair concluded on Sunday.
Plastic waste was seen washed on the main KTC-old market road as most of the vendors preferred not to collect the waste generated by the stalls.
When contacted, MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik said the civic body would forfeit the Rs 500 deposit taken from the vendors if they don’t clear the waste on their own. “While leasing out the stalls, the civic body has taken a deposit of Rs 500 from each of the vendors with a condition that the amount would be forfeited if they fail to remove the waste,” she said.
Replying to a question, Ms Naik said the civic body had collected revenue of Rs 13.81 lakh from the stalls during the old market feast this year. “Of the revenue, we have spent Rs 1.13 lakh on hiring the toilets and cleaning the area,” she said.
