PANJIM: The foundation stone for the long pending integrated burial and cremation ground for Hindu, Muslims and other religion and animal shelter was laid on Monday by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) in association with Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA).
GSUDA last week issued work order for the project, awarded to Bagkiya constructions for Rs 10.5 crore. The estimated time period for the completion of the project is 18 months. The project will replace the existing kabrastan and crematorium at St Inez.
Minister for Urban Development Milind Naik, who laid the foundation stone, urged the contractor to ensure that the work is completed within the stipulated time period of 18 months.
GSUDA vice chairman Siddarth Kunkolienkar said the project is been conceptualised taking all the communities into confidence. He assured people that their wishes and suggestions are being taken into account while preparing the plan.
“As said by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, people will have to think with positivity. People will have to be positive,” he said.
The integrated burial and cremation ground for Hindus, Muslims and other religions is phase I of the project, which is designed by architect Rahul Deshpande.
In the second phase, CCP has proposed to redevelop the Christian cemetery at St Inez.
