CURCHOREM: Wilred Leisure SC Curtorim got the better of Cortalim Villagers Sports and Social Welfare Association 1-0 to clinch the Late Fr Gervasio Pinto Memorial Inter-Village Football tournament, organised by Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem, at Figueiredo ground, Curchorem on Sunday.
The teams attacked from the word go and kept the crowd on their toes.
Both the teams were struggling hard to take the lead but there was no score at the lemon break.
Changing ends, striker Joel Fernandes scored the match winner in the 45th minute of play.
Wilred Leisure SC, Curtorim were richer by Rs 44,444 while Cortalim Villagers had to be content with Rs 33,333.
Following individual prizes prizes were awarded: Joel Fernandes (First scorer of the final), Savio Paes of Cortalim (Best goal-keeper), Placindinho Fernandes of Wilred (Best defender), Elvis Pereira of Cortalim (Best Mid-filder), Sertario Monteiro of Wilred (Best striker) and player of tournament to Johnson Bhogot of Wilred.
Curchorem MLA and GTDC Chairman, Nilesh Cabral was the chief guest for the final and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour, CCMC chairperson Vishwas Sawant Dessai, Parish Priest of Guardian Angel Church, Fr Santan D’Souza, Fr Jerry Vaz Headmaster of Guardian Angel High School, Lyndon Monteiro chairman of Goa Meat Complex, Councillors Jasmine Braganza, Tony Coutinho, Piedade Fernandes, Joe Vas, Chairman of Wilred Leisure Riston Rodrigues, Guardian Angel SC coach Jose Rod and other dignitaries.
