MARGAO: Konkan Railway’s Margao station took on a new neat look today as around 700 volunteers of Sant Nirankari Charitable Foundation cleaned up the station and surrounding areas for four long hours braving the hot sun.
The programme was launched at 9 am and wound up at 1 pm during which time volunteers armed with brooms swept the platforms and surrounding areas while others with buckets mopped the platforms, and cleaned the pillars on the platforms.
Some volunteers used spades to rid the area of overgrowth and others sprayed the area between the railway tracks with water. Hustle and bustle reigned at the station however, at the end of it the station looked neat and clean.
The foundation had tied up with the Margao Municipal Council to dispose the garbage collected during the drive. Truckloads of garbage was collected however as the municipal trucks did not come to collect, it could not be quantified.
The Foundation has been appointed brand ambassador for railway stations under the Swach Bharat campaign by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu from the year 2015 after they had cleaned 46 railways stations across the country.
February 23 is a very special day for the Foundation as it is the birthday of the earlier in charge Harinder Singh and usually the Foundation undertakes a major task. Currently Mata Savinder, wife of Harinder Singh is heading the organization.
