MARGAO: The Margao Railway station even after being awarded the best and cleanest station on the Konkan Railway route and has also been given funds for the keeping up cleanliness, the sewage is here to stay.
Observers say that the problem lies in the management of sewage generated from the establishments within the railway premises.
There are several places from where sewage has been flowing and faeces from the hotel are getting released in the open.
Mohan Parwar, who often visits the railway station, said, “The scene at the railway station is pathetic. Sewage is being released in the open. Some soak-pits and septic tanks are overflowing and it is the message of filth and dirt which is being conveyed indirectly to the tourists visiting Goa.”
“We have complained; and several inspections too were held of the same problem. However, no action has been taken or remedy done to ensure that the sewage stops flowing,” Mohan said and questioned, “Where is Swacch Bharat?”
Simran Prabhu Malkarnekar, a student, said “This is exactly opposite to how we have to manage our sewage and garbage. The place is smelling; faeces is flowing; and the place looks so ridiculous to me; I can’t imagine how the people who visit the station bear the same.”
A clan of rag pickers have also settled down within the compound of the railway station and are living merrily. The RPF have at certain instances fined people for having no platform ticket, but have failed to remove these rag pickers community at the station area.
