MARGAO: A demo presented by a native of Karnataka near Benaulim Panchayat to show how to take care of garbage ended in flop show as fumes and leakages marred the trial run of the plant.
Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) officials, who were invited to witness the demo by Green World, claimed the Panchayat did not furnish them any technical details vis-a-vis the plant and they were unaware of the system that was being put in place by the native of Karnataka.
Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva said the plant had a leakage, resulting in the emission of thick fumes and foul odour. “The native has promised to repair the unit and give a fresh demo. If the leakage continues, it will be a big problem. The people will be in trouble if the leakage and odour continue,” he added.
GSPCB official Joglekar said whenever a new system is introduced, the party is required to provide the technical details to the Board. “In the present case, neither panchayat nor the party has submitted any details. The technical data is to be placed before the Technical Advisory Committee before a decision is taken,” Joglekar said.
Syed Ahmed, a native of Gadag-Karnataka, told the media that the plant has a capacity to digest and convert 400 kilograms of waste into 40 grams. He claimed there’s no pollution nor odour or smoke nor any side effects from the chemical added to the tank. “I have been doing research on this waste digester for some time now,” he added.
