PANJIM: Valankani Boys Merces were lucky to enter the final of the Anton Joao 7-a-side Memorial football tournament defeating Albert Developers, St Inez via the tie-breaker.
In the first semi-final played at St Agostinho ground, St Cruz, both the teams failed to break the deadlock (0-0) and the penalty shoot-out was resorted to decide the winner.
The tournament is organised by Kraftwork Nite in memory of late Anton Joao Fernandes at the St Agostinho ground, St Cruz.
In the penalty shoot-out, both teams succeeded to score two tries in the first three attempts. Alwyn Cardozo and Octavio Miranda scored for Albert Developers while Mouzan’s try was saved. Isaac, Jotesh netted for Valankani while Elton failed in his attempt. However, in the sudden death Suraj found the net for Valankani and Olan Chandran failed for the losers.
Referee Melroy D’Silva cautioned Olan Chandran of Albert Developers and also Jotesh, Isaac and Elton – all of Valankani Boys Merces.
Valankani Boys will now meet the winners of the other semi-final to be contested between Maldini Boys Tonca and St Sebastian Boys Goa Velha.
The final is slated for January 26. Eight teams took part in the tournament.
