VALPOI: The Itihas Sanvardhan Samitti-Sattari has demanded that the fort at Nanus-Valpoi, which has been neglected by the government, be turned into a tourist spot.
The Itihas committee, led by Adv Shivaji Dessai, organised a debate on the topic ‘Past, present and future Sattari’ at Nanus fort on the occasion of Republic Day celebrations.
“On January 26, 1852, Deepaji Rane, the freedom fighter from Sattari, started his agitation from Nanus fort as a base to revolt against the Portuguese,” informed Adv Dessai.
He said a memorandum would be submitted to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar demanding the renovation of the Nanus fort premises and to turn it nto a tourist spot so that tourists could visit the place and local youth could get employment here.
Earlier, Freedom fighter Shivajirao Dessai garlanded the portrait of Deepaji Rane at Nanus fort and the main debate commenced after paying floral tribute to Deepaji Rane by freedom fighters, senior citizens and prominent social activists of Sattari.
Prof Vinay Bapat, Ranjeet Rane, Vishwajeet K Rane, Sanjay Tendulkar, Satish Dessai, Adv Ajitsingh Rane, Uday Sawant and others participated in the debate.
The Nanus fort in Goa was built by Shivaji during the 17th century and was later used as a base by Deepaji Rane during his revolts. Presently, the fort is in dilapidated condition and needs special attention.
