PANJIM: Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Principal Chief Engineer Public Work Department with regards to media reports that the Zuari bridge is in a dangerous condition.
A Marathi newspaper had reported on the poor condition of the Zuari bridge, which connects the North to South. GHRC has take suo-motu cognisance of the matter and issued notices to Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma and PWD Principal Chief Engineer Uttam Parsekar.
The authorities have been asked to submit a detailed report on the feasibility of the Zuari Bridge by December 14. “The media report cannot be lightly brushed aside. It is pertinent to note that there is heavy vehicular traffic on the bridge and in the event any untoward incident takes place, it may prove disastrous and fatal to the public members using the bridge. This matter therefore must be viewed seriously,” the GHRC secretary said in the order.
The government had recently announced that the bridge is safe for vehicular movement and regular checks are being done to ascertain its feasibility.
GHRC in another order has issued notices to village panchayat secretaries of Morlem, Sattari, Keri, Poriem, Director panchayat, Director of Health services, Chief Engineer Water Resources, member secretary Goa State Pollution Control Board over a media report pertaining to encroachment in Valvanti river, leaving the river in a pathetic condition.
