PANJIM: Police arrested a gang of 12 persons involved in theft and pick-pocketing during the final journey of late Manohar Parrikar on Monday.
Panjim PI Sudesh Naik informed that on Monday afternoon, Kedar Manerkar filed a complaint against a duo that was caught red handed while trying to snatch away his gold chain worth Rs 30,000. The accused Sachin Pawar and Sanju Mane, both natives of Ahmadnagar in Maharashtra were placed under arrest.
He further informed that later in the evening, a team consisting of LIB and robot staff arrested 10 others from around Kala Academy from amongst the crowd which had assembled to pay homage to Parrikar. The 10 accused were manhandled by the public for allegedly attempting to pick pockets and snatch chains.
“Upon questioning the accused persons were unable to give satisfactory answers and could not produce any of their identity documents. Accordingly, they were placed under arrest under Section 41 of CrPC,” PI Naik stated.
He informed that eight of the accused are from Ahmadnagar in Maharashtra and four are from different parts of Karnataka.
“During interrogation, all the accused confessed that they attempted pick pocketing, (chain) snatching and other similar offences in view of funeral ceremony, taking advantage of the large crowd,” he added.
The accused have been identified as Sachin Pawar, Sanju Mane, Navnath Pawar, Eknath Maselkar, Amod Maselkar, Amol Gite, Rameshwar Gaykwad and Sachin Masal from Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. Manju Nandangale from Dharwad, Sunil Bhural from Hubli, Bhimappa Golar from Shimoga and Mukund Chritian from Henekal, all four from Karnataka.
