FATORDA: Damodar College, Margao got the better of Govt College, Quepem 5-4 via the tie-breaker in the inaugural match of the second edition of the prestigious ACF Trophy 2015 Inter-Collegiate Football tournament, organized by Herald Group, at the artificial turf ground, outside Nehru Stadium, here, on Friday. There was no score at full time.
In the first half, the teams played an evenly contested match with most of the ball confined to the midfield.
Damodar College could have scored early on through Neliston D’Silva, who dribbled two defenders and unleashed a left-footer but to his dismay, the ball sailed inches over the cross piece.
Thereafter, Govt College attacked through Ashley Carvalho’s powerful grounder but his effort did not materialize as the ball fell straight into the hands of Damodar College goalkeeper in the 10th minute off an assist by Pramod Velip.
Damodar College continued to move ahead as Sapam Keny came close to scoring in the 15th minute only to see his shot blocked by rival goalkeeper Jovial Coutinho.
In the second session, Damodar College dominated as Nelistun D’Silva supplied Saipem with a perfect through ball but the latter lacked finishing.
Govt College missed a sitter in the 50th minute after Pramod Velip shot wide off a supply by from Nickson Fernandes.
In the tie-breaker, Damodar College scored through Nalistun D’Silva, Gleto D’Cruz, Sampam Keny, Nikil Naik and Mascon Fernandes while Govt College Quepem scored through Nickson Fernandes, Leo Fernandes, Mario Fernandes and Jovial Coutinho.
Nalistun D’Silva was the Man-of-the-Match of Damodar College.
Earlier, in an exhibition girl’s match, Rosary College, Navelim defeated Govt College, Quepem 1-0 via the tie-breaker. Ansiua Vaz scored the lone goal for Rosary College.
The player of the match went to Rasika Velip.
GFDC CEO, Alexio Da Costa was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of former GFA secretary Savio Messaia, Vinay Kunkolienkar, GFA executive member Welvyn Menezes and other dignitaries.
Alexio Da Costa congratulated the Herald Group for the initiative which allows the youngsters to shine and get an opportunity to showcase their talent.
