PANJIM: Indian Medical Association (IMA) in association with the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) held an awareness programme on the effective way of disposal of the biomedical waste.
The CCP has stopped collecting the biomedical waste from the hospitals and clinics. In addition Manipal Hospital which was collecting the biomedical waste has also decided to stop the collection with effect from 1 April 2017.
Speaking at the program, CCP Commissioner said that as per the rules collection the biomedical waste and disposing it off is not the responsibility of the CCP. “We don’t have that facility and we are collecting and increasing our responsibility… This is being done without any plant or land filling site”, he added.
CCP Mayor Surendra Furtado requested the doctors with their clinics within the jurisdiction of the CCP to cooperate with the municipal body to provide the best services and managing the waste in the city.
“Panjim does not have its own waste treatment plant. I request the doctors’ fraternity to request the government to allot land for dumping waste and treating the waste”, he stated.
IMA President Shekhar Salkar said that the medical body will facilitate in reaching a amicable solution based on the method of segregation at source and help the stakeholders as well as the CCP in managing the biomedical waste.
