Santos elected Chinchinim sarpanch

MARGAO: The newly-elected Chinchinin Sarpanch Santos Rebello, has stated that the panchayat would want the market complex building at the land that has already been acquired.

Rebello added that he would place the matter before the people at the upcoming gram sabha and reiterated that the market complex should come at the place that was decided by the panchayat in the past. Rebello was elected unopposed as the sarpanch of Chinchinim. The panchayat has 11 members. As there were no other nomination for the vacant post, Rebello was declared elected by the returning officer B Parvar.
It is to be noted that the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) had floated a tender in 2014 to build a panchayat ghar-cum-sports complex on the acquired land but there was no headway as the panchayat had reverted to its original decision of having a market complex on that land.
However GSIDC had stated that the project is on hold till the panchayat adopts a stand on the issue. GSIDC’s stand has raised doubts in the village whether the government will fund the proposal for a market complex cum panchayat ghar when the tendered project for a panchayat ghar cum sports complex did not find favour with the panchayat.
