CANACONA: The families of six Goans who perished in the Ruby Residency building tragedy on January 4 will get additional financial assistance of Rs 1.25 lakh each from the funds collected by the BJP as gate-fee collection from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Goa rally.
The financial assistance will be given to the six families in a function at the Mini-Sports Complex, Chaudi-Canacona, on January 4, 2015, to mark the first anniversary of the Ruby Residency building tragedy.
It may be recalled that while the search, rescue and recovery operations were underway at the building site in Chaudi-Canacona, the BJP had organised a mammoth Modi rally near Panjim.
This had sparked off angry protests from the opposition Congress that the rally of then BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had been organised at a time when bodies were being recovered from the accident site.
The BJP had collected a gate fee of Rs 5 from each participant at the Modi-rally and according to Canacona BJP Block Vice President Sanjay Komarpant, approximately Rs 7.5 lakh had been collected as gate collection fee from the Modi rally.
The BJP has now decided that the Rs 7.5 lakh will be distributed to the families of six Goans who lost their lives in the tragedy. The six Goan workers who died in the tragedy were Sudhakar Ganesh Velip (Badsaram-Gaondongrim), Vikas Devu Velip (Badsarem-Gaondongrim), Subhash Devu Gaonkar, (Shristhal-Gaondongrim), Santosh Bhagat (Khalwadem-Canacona), Dilip Velip (Vaizawada-Shristhal) and Krishna Chandru Velip (Barcem-Quepem).
Those who will attend the function include BJP President Vinay Tendulkar Canacona MLA and Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar and other BJP leaders.
