CUNCOLIM: Former Goa civil services officer Elvis Gomes, who retired voluntarily from government service last month, will join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday.
The AAP state unit has organised a special programme at Panjim where Gomes, along with his supporters will join the party.
Speaking to Herald, Gomes confirmed he is joining AAP and said, “When I closed one shop this door was always open,” indirectly hinting that politics was always an option. Asked why he chose AAP, he said, “It is the most neutral platform in Goa today as there is no divisive agenda.”
Gomes said the party leaders were in touch with him but he had not responded as he was weighing options. “Suddenly I found that they are quite clear of what to do. Basically they are talking about the people and the consultative processes. I have seen their work,” he said.
Gomes also said that he has had direct talks with party leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia.
It is learnt that Gomes, who is regarded as the son of the soil in Cuncolim, an upright officer and has served as Cuncolim Union president, will be the AAP candidate from Cuncolim constituency.
