MARGAO: Asserting that historical monuments need to be protected and preserved, Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa demanded that the Betul Fort be restored, along with the installation of a statue of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

He was speaking after a visit to Shree Shantadurga Kuncolienkarin Temple at Fatorpa, along with Satara MLA Srimant Chatrapati Shivendrasinha Raje Bhosale, recently.
He also demanded that the area of the said Fort be freed from the control of the Customs Department and added that the people of Quepem Constituency were given the ‘lip service’ that the Fort would be removed from the control of Customs by previous MLA, but in reality, nothing was done.
“Betul Fort was built in 1679 under the guidance of Maratha King. This historic monument should be refurbished and protected,” the MLA said.
