MARGAO: Beef loving Goans had to virtually go without it since Thursday as cold-storages stopped importing meat from Belgaum to express their solidarity with local meat traders following a High Court order stopping slaughter of animals at the Goa Meat complex.
A cold storage owner, who is a member of the All Goa Cold Storage Owners Association, told Herald on Monday that they stopped procuring beef from Belgaum from Thursday even though transport operations started from across the borders on Wednesday. “We are on strike since Thursday to express our solidarity with the local meat traders, whose business has hit a block following the High Court directions to the Goa Meat complex stopping animal slaughter. We will take a call on resuming our business only after the development in the High Court on Tuesday”, a cold storage owner said.
Replying to a question, he said that injustice has been done to the slaughtering of animals at the meat complex by the government. “Our information suggests that the so-called NGO is working in connivance with the government functionaries, when there are authorized veterinary doctors to certify before animals are cleared for slaughtering”, the owner said.
Information revealed that cold storages numbering around 140, spread across the state, were importing roughly around 16 to 18 tons of beef from Belgaum. “We used to import on an average 5 to 6 tons of beef from Belgaum every alternate day. The import has stopped since Thursday and we will review our decision only on Tuesday when the Goa Meat complex matter comes up in the High Court”, the cold-storage owner said.
