According to Ponda PI C L Patil, the incident occurred at about 3 pm on Thursday when the boyfriend had gone to meet the deceased, Priya Gaonkar, at her residence.
Police said Priya may have taken the drastic step after an ugly spat her boyfriend got into with two youth in her locality. PI Patil suspects the incident may have upset the deceased.
While proceeding to her house, Priya’s boyfriend entered into an argument with two youth, who reside near her residence at Parshuram Nagar.
Police informed that the boyfriend, who was under influence of liquor, had heated arguments with the two youth and allegedly manhandled them. In retaliation, the duo beat him up. The incident lasted for almost an hour.
PI Patil said, “The woman may have decided to take the extreme step of committing suicide at her boyfriend’s house as she had the keys to it.”
The PI further said when the fight between her boyfriend and two youth was in progress, she had contacted her boyfriend’s sister and sister-in-law residing at Siolim and had informed them about the incident.
Police said the matter was, however, settled between Priya’s boyfriend and the two youth at the police station after his sister and sister-in-law rushed to Ponda police station. The boy’s sister also informed Ponda police about marriage plans between Priya and her boyfriend.
However, no one was aware that Priya went to her boyfriend’s house and committed suicide by hanging herself to a ceiling fan with the help of dupatta.
PI Patil suspects that the incident might have taken place later on Thursday evening, as they received a call at about 8.30 pm.
Ponda police conducted the panchanama and handed over the body to her relatives on Friday evening.
