Nearly 150 stray dogs from across all the seven wards of the village were collected and send to the Sonsodo Veterinary centre for sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination. It may be noted that two dogs were tested Rabies positive during the drive.
The villagers raised the issue of stray dogs at the recently held gram saba meeting. It was brought to notice that groups of stray dogs were even unearthing graves from the Carmona cemetery for want of food; the dogs were also regularly attacking pigs and cattle in the village. Also numerous cases of dog bites were reported in the village each day.
Sarpanch Lavita Dias inform that stray dogs population was growing at an alarming rate on the beach side where abundant waste food normally is available during the tourism season from the shacks, but after the closure of the season and the shacks, all these stray dogs invade into the residential areas for survival and attack local pigs, fouls, and even human beings.
Locals were also encouraged to send their pets to get them operated to control the birth rate. Coordinator of Mission Rabies Savio Coutinho appealed to the local panchayats within Salcette to come forward and conduct similar drives within their respective panchayats. Project Manager Praveen Ohal congratulated the Carmona Panchayat for taking a positive initiative for the welfare of the village and also contributing towards the expenses for the animal birth control and vaccination programme.
