PANJIM: Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim edged past new entrants Mormugao United, Vasco 3-1 via the tie-breaker in the final of Prime Coastal Cup football tournament, organized by Prime Sports Club, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando, Benaulim, on Sunday.
The teams employed a cautious approach in the initial stages but raised the tempo in the second session.
For Cavelossim, midfielder Neil D’Cruz and Raju Cardozo provided good passes but the strikers were found wanting.
Mormugao playmaker Paul Sequiera was the only bright spot for the new comers. With the match ending goalless in regulation period the tie-breaker was enforced in which Cavelossim kept their cool and scored through Mohammad Sheikh, Presley D’Sa and Edsel Rodrigues while Abhijeet Chodankar was the lone scorer for Mormugao United.
The following prizes were awarded to Best goalkeeper of the tournament and final Darshan Ambore (Mormugao United), Best defender of the final Orvil Matos (Cavelossim), Best midfielder of the final Neil D’Cruz (Cavelossim), Best striker of the final Raju Cardozo (Mormugao United) and man of the finals Paul Sequiera.
Earlier, chief guest Benaulim MLA Caetano D’Silva, Premanand Lotlikar, Dr Wiseman Pinto were introduced to the teams by Organising Committee Chairman Trevor Fernandes.
Before the start of the finals, top SSC rankers from Benaulim were given awarded with cash prizes.
