CANACONA: Two encroachers along a Turtle Nesting Site at Galgibaga beach in Canacona are reported to have demolished their illegal structures, after being served with notices from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority.
According to sources, GCZMA had recently issued notices to two private parties after receiving a complaint from the forest department about encroachments on Turtle Nesting Site at Galgibaga.
The encroachers were given seven days to demolish the illegal structures and the Poinguinim panchayat had also received a copy of the notice.
The structures were allegedly constructed in the land acquired by the forest department for the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at Galgibaga.
One tourism operator, who was served with the notice, demolished the structures on his own and reportedly submitted a letter and photos of the place to the Poinguinim panchayat.
Sources further informed that the second structure was also removed by the second encroacher, but the party concerned was yet to submit details to the panchayat.
It may be recalled that the State government had acquired several CRZ areas along Galgibaga coast to set up the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, while the process is underway to acquire more CRZ areas.
According to sources, the GCZMA and Forest Department has excluded some old houses and a Church, existing within 80-100 metres from the high tide line, from acquisition for the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.
