CALANGUTE: The tourism capital of Goa – Calangute is dogged by constant power fluctuations and a lot and frequent power cuts. In the office of the Calangute sarpanch itself there were four power cuts over a period of one hour, when this correspondent was in the office.
When asked to comment on the frequent power cuts in the village, the acting sarpanch of Calangute Vinayak (Subhash) Salgaonkar said, “The power supply to the rapidly developing village of Calangute, which is also a tourist destination, has been greatly affected. There is frequent breakdown in power supply, causing inconvenience to villagers of Calangute and tourists. The tourism destination should have sufficient power and water supply besides better roads.”
He also said that the ex-chief minister Manohar Parrikar had promised to take care of the power woes of Calangute by providing a separate 33KV cable from Nagoa sub-power station besides setting up a new Calangute sub-station while inaugurating the electricity department’s office at Calangute.
Unfortunately for Calangute, the ex-chief minister’s assurances have not been honoured by the government and the village has to rely on other villages for its requirement of power. “We would have not witnessed frequent power cuts had Calangute been provided with 33KV cable power supply and a separate sub- station” added Salgaonkar.
Salgaonkar hoped that the present chief minister of Goa would take up the issue with the concerned minister and meet the power demands of Calangute.
