MARGAO: Sporting Club of Davorlim blanked Immaculate Conception Sports Club (ICSC) Paroda 2-0 to emerge champions of All-Goa Jose Bento Furtado memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Goa Football Referee Association in association with Margao Sports Club in an pulsating final at Rosary Ground, Navelim on Friday. Sporting Club of Davorlim led 1-0 at half time.
Both teams displayed attacking football and kept the crowds on their toes. As the match progressed, Davorlim took control of the match and troubled the rival defenders with well orchestrated raids. Davorlim’s break through came in the 30th minute when striker Andrew Colaco bulged the net.
Stung by that setback, ICSC raised the tempo and fired a couple of pot shots however Davorlim defenders stood tall in protecting the slender lead.
Davorlim had a couple of scoring opportunities but their forwards were guilty of muffing sitters.
Post resumption, Davorlim continued to enjoy the better share of exchanges and their forwards swarmed all over the rival territory but near misses prevented them from increasing the tally.
Davorlim scored the insurance goal midway through the second half when Agnelo Colaco punished the rival goalkeeper with clinical finish.
Down by two, ICSC went all out but rival defence were too strong and frustrated the forward attacks with neat tackles.
Davorlim were richer by Rs 75,000 while ICSC had to settle for Rs 50,000.
The following individual prizes were awarded: best goalkeeper of the final-Sachin Ahstekar of Sporting Club of Davorlim; best forward: Andrew Colaco of Sporting Club of Davorlim; first scorer of the final: Andrew Colaco of Sporting Club of Davorlim.
Earlier Sanvordem MLA Ganesh Gaonkar cut the birthday cake of Labour Minster Avertano Furtado who celebrated his birthday.
Industries Minister Mahadev Naik was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Deputy Speaker Anant Shet, MLA Ganesh Gaonkar and GFA Executive member Bishuit Themudo. Earlier Jose Dias welcomed the guests while Premamand Morajkar proposed a vote of thanks. The function was compered by Adley D’Costa.
