PANJIM: The State Government on Tuesday granted another extension of 90 days to the 17-member committee on the Medium of Instruction (MoI). The Committee was earlier given extension of 90 days as it was unable to submit a detailed report to the government.
The committee is expected to begin with its meetings in remaining talukas in April.
Meanwhile, since the three-month extension granted to MoI committee ended a month ago, it had approached the government seeking another short tenure to complete the pending task. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who has this subject close to his heart, had said that he be taking a final call to either extend the term or scrap it.
However, nearly a week ago, just before the counting and formation of the new government, Director of Higher Education Bhaskar Nayak headed committee referred the matter to the State seeking an extension of around two months to complete meetings in South Goa. “We will take maximum one month to complete the task and submit the report,” he said.
The government on July 15, 2016 had constituted a 17-member ‘advisory committee’ under the chairmanship of Director of Higher Education Bhaskar Nayak to advise the government on arriving at an appropriate decision as regards the MoI issue. The committee was required to hold extensive consultations with various stakeholders in education and submit its report within 120 days.
The government had also constituted the committee to advise on the issue of grants to English medium schools and to study the entire system of grants and financial support to govt aided schools and to improve the overall efficiency for achieving education goals.
When the panel was formed in July, it was asked by to submit its report on what the medium of instruction should be at the primary school level in Goa. The deadline for the report was set for the first week of November.
In November, the 17-member committee sought an extension of 90 days, which was granted and the report was to be submitted on February 2.
