MARGAO: Down in the dumps post-Assembly polls after its sitting Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues faced a defeat at the hands of Independent, Benjamin D’Silva, the Congress party has embarked on a plan to re-build the party in what was once considered its bastion.
The Velim Block Congress party had its first meeting after the Assembly polls, wherein the participants vowed to strengthen the party in Velim constituency to face the coming Lok Sabha polls.
Three-time MLA and outgoing water resources Minister in the Congress government Filipe Neri Rodrigues, Congress general secretaries Altinho Gomes and Joe Dias, South Goa congress President, Subhash Faldessai, congress block president Angel Xavier, besides party members attended the meeting held at the residence of Filipe Neri.
In his address, Filipe Neri told the workers that his doors are always open for party workers and functionaries and expressed his support to any programme undertaken by the party to strengthen the organization.
Congress general secretary Joe Dias said the party had to pay the price for the mistakes in the past, but appealed to the party workers to forget the past and help build the organization right from the grass root level. He brought to the notice of the workers the failure of the government on several fronts, including law and order, and requested them to gear up for the coming Lok Sabha polls.
Congress general Secretary Altinho Gome, who presided the meeting as an observer, made a plea to the workers to remain united and build the party to face the challenges facing the common man.
The Congress was routed in Velim in the last Assembly polls when Independent MLA Benjamin D’Silva defeated Filipe Neri by a convincing margin.
