Farmers from Uguem having their paddy fields in the vicinity of Mortagall, Borcotteagall and Chitopgall wards of Uguem have urged Chief Minister Digambar Kamat for immediate clearance of file pertaining to the commissioning of Lift Irrigation scheme to supply agricultural water to Uguem.
Farmers led by Francisco Carvalho informed Herald that in 2008, they had made a representation to the government for the commissioning of Lift Irrigation scheme.
Carvalho further informed that paddy fields for which they demand the supply of agricultural water are situated barely about 2 kms from the existing pipeline and the government need not spend much for laying the proposed pipeline.
“The commissioning of the pipeline will benefit about 40 farmers in the locality and will bring under cultivation approximately about 20 hectares of paddy fields under cultivation,” said Carvalho.
“The farmers are presently cultivating the said paddy fields only during monsoon and if provided with water under Lift Irrigation scheme, farmers will also enable to get the paddy fields cultivated during winter,” claimed Carvalho.
“The department has already conducted the site inspection and estimate for the project drawn up but the file is presently kept under hold for the chief minister’s nod,” added Carvalho.
The farmers have now called on the chief minister to clear the file by January 15, 2011, failing which the farmers have threatened to lead an agitation to the Secretariat.
