PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has asked its residents, government departments as well as commercial establishments, within its jurisdiction to undertake segregation of solid waste failing which penalties would be imposed.
In a public notice issued, the CCP has asked all multistoried buildings, apartments, hotels, restaurants, buildings owned and occupied by Central and State government departments or undertakings, hospitals etc to undertake segregation of solid waste.

The CCP has categorised solid waste into 16 different categories including e-waste, paper, tube lights and bulbs, batteries, clothes, glass, coconut shells, soft and hard plastic etc. The waste is to be segregated as per the categories. The civic body has granted 30 days period to the various bodies to comply with the notification failing which has warned of penalties under Solid Waste Management and Handling bylaws. The CCP had recently announced to set up 18 biomethanation treatment plants in the capital to process organic waste in a decentralised manner.
The corporation will execute the project through a tie-up with Flycatchers Technology LLP for which funding will be through the Finance Commission.
The biomethanation system converts organic waste into biogas, which can be utilised for domestic or commercial cooking.
