MAPUSA: Mapusekars are longing for their library for almost two years now. Since September 2019, after the Mapusa Municipal Council had resolved to handover the old Mapusa municipal building, where the Athaide library of Mapusa was operating, to Art and Culture Department to set up District Library since the building was in depilated condition, Mapusekars’ hope to get a library is still in limbo.

Soon after the resolution was passed the Art and Culture minister Govind Gawde had even inspected the building in September 2019, but not a single brick of the building was moved for its renovation.
The renovation of the Heritage old Municipality building was estimated at cost of Rs 8 crore by the Art and Culture Department and was suppose to complete the work by June 2020, but they are yet to get the building from MMC.
It was also promised that by the time the district library gets ready, municipality will make temporary provision but nothing flipped in favour of the book lovers of Mapusa.
Undeterred GOACAN have written several letters to Art and Culture Department as well as Urban Development and Mapusa Municipal Chief highlighting that even after one and half year the issue has not been resolved, but in vain.
They even highlighted in their letters that as the monsoon is approaching, it is important that urgent steps has to be taken to shift the books of the Library to an alternate site while repairs are undertaken of the old Municipal building.
