MARGAO: The MMC Chairperson, Babita Angle, has complained that the garbage workers and municipal staff have been deputed for election duty paralyzing the system totally.
Angle has requested the District Election Office to release some of the staff to keep the garbage collection system working failing which she has warned that she would have to make a public statement blaming the administration for the problems.
Angle said that at least 70 to 80 of officers, clerks, peons, office staff, supervisors and others have been deputed for election work; 44 of whom are responsible for collecting garbage.
“MMC has reached a situation that the garbage is not being picked up for the entire day. We cannot function like this. In three days the city will stink if the garbage is not picked up,” she complained.
“If the collector doesn’t release the staff, we will be forced to make a press statement asking people to blame the Collector for the problem,” she warned.
Collector Swapnil Naik said that he would be looking into the application of the MMC even though he has not touched the over 250 workers of the MMC involved in the garbage collection. “The chief officer though has not spoken of any major problem, we will still look into the application and release the staff if need be,” the collector said.
