PANJIM: Sahitya Academy award winning Konkani writer Dilip Borkar on Tuesday joined the Congress in presence of AICC Goa election observer P Chidambaram.
Borkar was part of the 1979 agitation launched by the students of Goa to demand 50 per cent bus concession. He won the prestigious Sahitya Academy Award in 2016.

AICC Goa desk in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Girish Chodankar, working president Aleixo Sequeira and Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat welcomed Borkar into the party.
The eminent writer said his only idea behind joining Congress is to rebuild the party and ensure its victory in 2022 elections.
“We, as Congressmen need to be united and it is our duty to rebuild the party and bring it to power in 2022 elections,” he said.
Borkar said the party workers need to fight unitedly against the false propaganda made to malign the image of the Congress in Goa and India. “I have not joined the party for ticket or candidature. I want the Congress to come to power. We need to throw BJP out of power. I want to save Goa from the current government and Congress is only alternative,” he said.
Borkar, who is also a well known political columnist, said he had to stop writing columns on newspapers following threats. “I received several anonymous threat calls to stop writing against the government…for my own safety I did stopped it,” he said.
