MARGAO: Is the Tourism department concerned about the upkeep and maintenance of the bare minimum infrastructure at Colva beach?
If one goes by the state of affairs of the children’s park, with the play items either lying damaged or broken; the non-functioning high mast lamps or the absence of changing rooms and toilet facilities at the beach, Colva beach is certainly craving for attention from the department.
The latest symbol of apathy and indifference showed by the government agencies to tourists and visitors is the delay in carrying our repairs of the culverts over the Creek – connecting the beach to the land mass. That a woman visitor to the beach landed in the gaping hole on one of the two culverts has failed to spur the authorities to initiate action and get the hole repaired shows the indifference of the authorities towards Colva beach.
In fact, local social activists cried foul over the inordinate delay in plugging the crater on the culvert, demanding to know the concern of the tourism department towards the situation. “The crater on the culvert has been lying unattended for the last several days. A woman has sustained leg injuries after she landed inside while returning back from the beach. Such incidents does not augur well for the tourist state when the government is spending huge money on promotion of tourism”, remarked a resident Terezina Fernandes.
Activist Judith Almeida said the delay in repairing the hole only goes to show the callous attitude of the government agencies to Colva.
“The chidlren’s park is lying in shambles. There’s no proper illumination on the beach nor sanitation facilities. And, now there’ a hole which threatens the visitors”, Almeida lamented.
