Nineteen-year-old Derrick Raj, a resident of Andheri, Mumbai, tragically lost his life in an abandoned stone quarry in Shirven-Chimbel, Goa. Derrick and seven friends were on an outing when a girl in their group began drowning in the deep water. In an attempt to rescue her, Derrick and his friend Abner jumped into the quarry. While Abner and the girl managed to swim to safety, Derrick did not make it out.
Concerned friends called the Old Goa fire brigade around 5:30 pm on Sunday. Despite efforts by Station Fire Officer Ganesh Govekar and his team, they were unable to find Derrick in the dark, forcing them to postpone the search. His body was found on Monday by privately hired divers.

Old Goa police highlighted the danger of the abandoned quarry, which has claimed lives before, and emphasized the need for fencing to prevent such tragedies. Derrick, who was on holiday in Goa with his cousin, was supposed to return to Mumbai on Monday evening.
