MAPUSA: Host Saligao United made short work of Vagator PYSC 5-1 to storm into the quarter-finals of the Mc Dowell’s No. 1 Yarri Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Saligao United, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Sunday.
In a one sided affair, Saligao United dominated the game right from the word go and pushed their opponents on the back foot for mjaor part of the game.
Saligao United broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when striker Shadab Shaikh slotted past the rival goalkeeper with snap shot.
With Saligao United relentless in attack , a second goal was imminent and it came in the finest of moves as three minutes later, Shadab Shaikh doubled the lead when he hood-wicked the rival goalkeeper with neat finish .
In the 21st minute, Craig Menezes kept his cool and composure to stamp his class when he flicked the ball into the net to give his team a 3-0 lead.
Vagator PYSC were getting frustrated as their efforts were nullified by the rival defenders.
Post resumption , Saligao United continued to enjoy possession and torment the rival defence as Craig Menezes who was in thick of action inflated the tally with a stiff shot to register his brace in the 38th minute .
Vagator PYSC regrouped quickly and succeeded in reducing the margin through the boots of Renny Dias in the 55th minute.
Unfazed, Saligao United went into attacking mode and Siddesh Keshkar drove the last nail into rival coffin late in the second half .
