MARGAO: A superb second strike by Richard Dias helped Verna Sports Club to overcome Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda 1-0 and advance into the quarter-finals of All-Goa Vodafone inter-village football tournament organized by Colmorod Ratvaddo Sports Club, Navelim, Monday. There was no score at half time.
Oratory took time to settle down and once they struck rhythm they called the shots.
Verna Broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when striker Richard connected in style a measured cross from Basil Rego.
Oratory tried their best to neutralize the lead but the rival defenders thwarted them.
Verna intensified their forays and nearly doubled the lead in the 58th minute but Oratory goalkeeper Socorro
Azavedo denied Wilson Fernandes a sure goal.
At the fag end, goalkeeper Francis Abranches blocked Oratory Minguel Baretto’s rasping shot Don Bosco Oratory’s Blaise Faleiro was adjudged man-of-the-match.
Fr Agnelo Youth Sports Club, Paroda prevailed over Cuncolim Union 5-3 via the tie-breaker to cruise into the quarter-finals on Sunday.
The teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation period.
Fr Agnelo were the first to settle down and their forwards showed better approach and application.
Cuncolim Union surprisingly looked jaded.
Fr Agnelo could not score due to inept shooting by their forwards.
Cuncolim Union had a close shave late in the second half but striker Ramachandra Gaonkar’s rasping shot was blocked by the rival goalkeeper. Later, Ramchandra’s feeble shot went straight into the hands of the Cuncolim Union goalkeeper.
Manush Oliveira, Melwyn Fernandes, Edwin D’Costa, Alvison D’Costa, Ramchandra Gaonakr were on target for Fr Agnelo. Ryan Colaco, Adney Fernandes, Willander Fernandes converted for Cuncolim Union.
Mackroy Lima, who played a stellar role for Fr Agnelo was declared Most Valuable Player.
Earlier, Navelim Sarpanch Frank Fernandes inaugurated the tournament in the presence of Pichin, Operation Manager Marketing Vodafone, Biishut Themudo, chairman of CRSC, Navelim and GFA executive member and Joe Dias, president of Salcete Football Club and event manager,VJT Arts, Chinchinim.
