PANJIM: With two days to go for polls, the Congress party Wednesday dissolved its Cuncolim block committee and appointed a new president and committee, party spokesman said.
The Cuncolim constituency is currently represented by BJP MLA Rajan Naik, who wrested the seat from Joaquim Alemao, brother of present TMC candidate and former Congressman Churchill Alemao.
Announcing this at a press conference spokesman Urfan Mulla said that the new block committee would be headed by F Coutinho with Derek Pereira as his deputy.
He replaces A Noronha, who according to the party top brass, was removed after there were allegations of anti-party activities against him.
“There were complaints against him that he was calling up the block office bearers and workers and asking them to support another party,” Mulla told the media.
There have been changes in three Congress block committees in South Goa, though Congress party says that only two blocks have been dissolved ~ Benaulim and now Cuncolim ~ while the Dabolim block members had left the party and so had to be replaced.
Mullah also criticized the BJP utterances against the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid Syed Bukhari who had announced that he would support the Congress in the Lok Sabha election and questioned whether it was okay for people like Sri Ram Sene’s Pramod Muthalik and yoga guru Baba Ramdev to support the BJP in their personal capacity and not the Imam.
Meanwhile, reacting to criticism against its president John Fernandes,
the Congress said that he had been specially appointed by the Congress top brass to finish the family raj and corruption from politics. The party also ridiculed BJP’s claims of Gujarat model of development citing figures and rubbished its argument that it was for upliftment of minorities.
It said, there was a lot of money given for education of minorities but the Gujarat government had not spent any of it and so where was their so called love for minorities in this case, Mullah asked.
