Chapora Yuvak Sangh shock Churchill Brothers

MAPUSA: Chapora Yuvak Sangh stunned Churchill Brothers 4-2 via the tie-breaker to enter the semi-finals of the 18th Edition of the Goa Police Football Cup organised by Goa Police Sports Cell, at Duler stadium, here, on Friday.

Early in the match, Chapora keeper Soma Korgaonkar, who had a fine outing against FC Goa Juniors, brought off two smart saves to block a strong header from Churchill’s skipper Meldon D’Silva and two minutes later collected confidently a Richard Costa header.

Chapora came threatening in the 26th minute but stopper back Meldon D’Silva brought up a smart clearance before Nehal Parsekar could pull the trigger from close.

In the added time, another stiff grounder by Churchill’s Chaitan Komarpant was pushed for a corner by keeper Soma.

On crossing over, Churchill’s coach Mateus Costa came with up two substitutions for Schubert Pereira and Pushkar Prabhu.

Chapora colts had two close attempts at the rival goal. A well executed free-kick by Akshay Dabholkar saw Rohit Totad’s header miss the target while minutes later this time Rohit’s fierce shot brushed the defender for a corner. From the resultant corner Rohit’s header was collected by Churchill’s keeper Nora Fernandes.

With the match ending in a goalless draw the penalty shoot-out was enforced where for Chapora colts Stephen Martin’s, Dimesh Morjkar, Akshay Dabholkar and Harshad Gaonkar found the net while for Churchill Brothers outfit only Richard Costa and Lalawmpuia Sailo scored.

Chapora’s keeper Soma Korgaonkar received his second man-of-the-match award from Samir Naik, Dempo coach.

At Ella’s ground, Old Goa, Sesa FA edged past Youth Club of Manora by 2-1 margin. Shridharnath Gawas and Kunal Salgaonkar scored for Sesa FA while Elden Colaco scored for YC Manora outfit.
