PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Friday pulled up the sarpanchas and secretaries of six village panchayats over failure to set up Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at their respective areas for the purpose of garbage disposal.
The public representatives and the government officers of the Village Panchayats of Assolda, Xeldem, Morpilla, Naqueri-Betul, Chinchinim and Seraulim are issued notices with directions to submit their replies as to why action under the Contempt of Courts Act should not be initiated against them for this failure.
During the hearing on Friday, the High Court also directed the Directorate of Panchayats to issue notices to the above six village panchayats to show cause as to why they should not be superseded for dereliction of duty while adjourning the matter for further hearing on May 4.
Last year, the High Court had directed 13 village panchayats to stop issuing construction licences until the facility is built within eight weeks while expressing “shock” that neither any MRF nor a temporary shed were made available for collection and storage of waste. They were asked to submit compliance report, which was done so. A few village panchayats had seen opposition from the villagers over setting up of the facility in residential areas with some claiming the project will soon be completed.
