PANJIM: President of India, Droupadi Murmu expressed her happiness after learning that 55 per cent conferred degrees and 60 per cent students who won gold medals were girls.
Addressing the gathering at 34th Convocation of Goa University at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, she said, “I am happy to note that around 55 per cent of girls are among those conferred degrees. I am also happy to know that 60 per cent girls are among the ones who won the gold medals. It gives me immense happiness that girls are excelling with self-confidence and ability.”

The President said that technology and innovation play a major role in today’s world. She was happy to note that Goa University is promoting innovation. She emphasised that developing world-class competence in areas such as artificial intelligence and data science in our higher educational institutions is essential. She was happy to note that the Goa University is running a programme ‘Digital Integrated System for Holistic Teaching and Virtual Orientations’ in collaboration with the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Goa.
The President noted that various schools have been formed in the campus of Goa University to encourage interdisciplinary studies by integrating different departments.
She praised Goa University for this initiative which is in line with the National Education Policy and said that this University has immense potential to become a centre of excellence for education, research and innovation.
Governor and Chancellor of Goa University P S Sreedharan Pillai said, “I am proud to say that Goa University has been one of the first Universities in India to implement the NEP 2020. We successfully rolled out the first phase of the NEP at the Post-Graduate level during the last academic year. And in the current academic year, we implemented it at the Under-Graduate level, across all colleges in Goa.”
Vice-Chancellor of Goa University Prof Harilal B Menon announced that Goa University has been selected for financial assistance to the tune of Rs 9.8 crore, under DST’s PURSE scheme. “The DST PURSE scheme recognises institutions that have consistently demonstrated a strong foundation in research and have exhibited exceptional potential for further advancement. The grant will help Goa University to further augment existing high end research facilities. These facilities will not only help the Goan students to complete their PG/Ph D but also encourage to incubate their ideas to Startup,” Menon said.
