PANJIM: In a bid to curb air pollution due to ore transportation, the industry has come together to invest in mechanised road sweeping machines.
On a pilot basis two road sweepers will be introduced, one each in North and South Goa on roads used to transport iron ore.
“The roads sweeper is essentially designed to suck the dust on the roads. This would partly help in keeping roads clearer than before,” Goa Mineral ore Exporters Association (GMOEA) secretary Glenn Kalavampara said.
The North Goa unit will work in mining areas from Sonshi-Godbhay, Honda Junction to Sonshi. The South Goa unit would work on roads from Sanvordem Tisk to Capxem and Sanvordem Tisk towards Ambedkar statue, Curchorem.
Ore is transported by around 400 trucks on roads passing through villages.
The dust pollution has been a major concern for the villagers.
Though the speed limit of the truck is fixed at 40kms per hour, violation of the rule leads to air and noise pollution as well as accidents.
