CUNCOLIM: Villages of Quepem Taluka like Barcem, Morpila and Subdolem are facing acute drinking water shortage. Some parts of Quepem Taluka are worst-hit and they are facing this problem for the last several years but no one has bothered to resolve their problems.
Barcem villagers are not even getting a drop of water from the department. Villagers of Barcem and specially Dhangars of Vargotimol depend on the river. There are some springs which are the major source of drinking water. Due to summer, the water levels have gone down, the villagers are forced to dig holes around the spring to get the “elixir” of life.
Dhangars of Vargotimol have to trudge more than five km to get water from the river. They purchase water from tankers too. “The government does not bother to provide them with potable water. The tanker comes once a week.” villager Bhiva Velip told Herald.
Sources from the department claim that in the coming days, they will resolve the crisis. The department has installed a water pipeline between Balli and Betul. “We are constructing a 2000 cubic litre tank at Nayabandh Cuncolim which will resolve the drinking water problem of Barcem and Morpila,” an official told Herald. Villagers of Pisone, Shirlim, Kajuwada, Borighoto, Vargotimol, are worst-affected wards. Villagers are demanding a permanent solution.
