NEW DELHI: Royal Wahingdoh were 2-1 winners in what was an enthralling first Shillong derby between the two sides in the I-League. Boithang Haoikip’s free-kick induced a headed own-goal from Lalchawnkima in the 15th minute, only for the unstoppable visitors to turn the match around through goals on either side of half time through Bekay Bewar and Seityasen Singh to hold the bragging rights in the football crazy city of Shillong.
Royal Wahingdoh started the I-League’s first derby brightly and were clearly the best side in the first half. Jackichand Singh was an absolute menace for the visitors all evening while the Liberian Bekay Bawar too was a real threat.
The latter had the first big chance of the game in the 8th minute with his flash-shot after some lacklustre defending from Lajong drew out a good save from Rehenesh diving to his left.
At the Kalyani Stadium, in Kolkata, Mohun Bagan put in a commendable performance in front of goal as they registered a 3-1 victory over ten-men Mumbai FC.
Katsumi Yusa scored a goal in each half with Sony Norde also adding his name to the score-sheet. Josimar da Silva did pull one back for the visitors but Bagan’s attacking verve was too much to handle for the Mumbaikars. Kunal Sawant was sent-off late in the game for handling the ball outside the box.
