PANJIM: Some of the top shuttlers from Bicholim and Sattari Talukas will be in action when the first edition of the Sanquelim Badminton League (SBL) begins on Friday. The league organised by Sanquelim Shuttlers will feature nine teams, and more than 80 players will compete for the championship trophies and a whole lot of other prizes, honours and accolades.
The official Badminton tournament season for 2020 will kick-start with this novel event. The League team event which concludes on November 1 will be staged at the Badminton Courts, Multipurpose stadium, Sanquelim. The first of this kind league team championship for these two talukas will be organised by Sanquelim Shuttlers, an affiliated member unit of Goa Badminton Association.
“It’s an excellent opportunity for badminton players from the talukas of Sattari and Bicholim to compete in a very exciting format. Many players from these talukas have been performing well in recent years and this championship gives them a platform to explore their skills in a very professional set-up and environment”, said Narahar Thakur, President of Goa Badminton Association.
The prominent players who will participate in the championship are Karan Dhavaskar, Nilesh Parab, Sohan Naik, Rudra Phadte, Aryan Phatarpekar, Prasad Ajgaonkar, Siraj Wadkar, Abhishek Swamy, Omkar Fulari, Nomaa Sancoalcar, Mayushri Ajgaonkar and Roopam Sancoalcar. Earlier, a player auction on the lines of India’s Premier Badminton League was held, where the nine teams bid for the 80+ players.
The three day event will kick-start on October 30 and the inaugural function will be graced by Sulakshana Sawant and Pravinjay Pandit, Mamlatdar, Bicholim, semi-finals will be held on November 1 (10am) while the final will be held on November 1 at 5 p.m. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will be the Chief Guest for the final while GBA President Narahar Thakur will be the guest of honour.
