PANJIM: Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani’s claim that she had a degree from the prestigious Yale University echoed in the Goa Legislative Assembly on Wednesday with Independent MLA Vijai Sardesai taking a dig at her. Irani has since clarified that it was a course and not a degree.
It was during discussion on demands for grants on education in the State that Sardesai spoke about the ‘university degree’ without naming her though.
“We have one of the most qualified education ministers (referring to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who also holds education portfolio) in the country. A minister who does not have to flaunt non-existent degree from Yale University to show his credentials,” he told the House.
Irani’s remark in Delhi, last weekend had reignited controversy about her qualifications across the country. Her academic credentials have always been a matter of debate since she was given the portfolio after Narendra Modi-led cabinet took office.
Yale University had later issued a statement that the minister was conferred a certificate for attending leadership program for Indian politicians at Yale. Irani had argued that her statement was misconstrued. “It is unfortunate that statement regarding my participation in a leadership program & certificate thereafter was misconstrued,” she said.
