CANACONA: Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar on Saturday informed that the State will have at least 5-6 sports schools, with the first sports school to be set up in Canacona.
Tawadkar was speaking after inaugurating the Goa Football Development Council’s 12th Football Development Centre (FDC) at Devabhaga Grounds, Canacona.
The DSYA Devabhaga ground, which has been earmarked for FDC will have an artificial turf and work for the same will commence shortly.
“The first sports school in the State with 7-8 disciplines will start at Canacona. Similarly, 5-6 sports schools in the state will see the State youth excelling at the national and international level,” stated Tawadkar.
Tawadkar also stated that work on the projects at Shristhal (especially developed for cricket) and Karvem (Gaondongrim) will commence shortly and would be completed within a year.
Tawadkar claimed that the BJP government had declared football as the State’s sports and had also appointed GFDC under the chairmanship of Dr Rufino Monteiro.
He also sought to dispel the notion that sports and studies were not always compatible with each other.
“There is a tendency amongst school managements, headmasters/headmistresses, teachers that encouraging children towards sports activities reduces their chances of academic excellence and this is a wrong notion,” said Tawadkar.
“The government intends to meet with heads of educational institutions to prevail upon them that children are equally exposed to sports activities to get good academic results, Tawadkar added.
