MAPUSA: Panjim Footballers registered a hard fought 1-0 win over Youth Club of Manora in the Goa Professional league, at Duler stadium, here, on Sunday.
Youth Club of Manora mourned the sudden death of their Parish Priest of Raia-Fr.Conceicao D’Silva where a minute of silence was observed at the start of the GPL match.
The all important goal came from the boots of Chandan Gawas in the 48th minute.
Panjim Footballers open their account with three points from two matches while YC Manora has lost their first match.
New entrants Manora playing their first league match though came with some attacks at the rival citadel their striker Eldon Colaco and U-20 Melisho Camotio lost ideas in front of the Panjim Footballers goal.
After thirty minutes of midfield tussle the only clear shot at the rival goal by Panjim’s Lloyd Cardozo hit Manora defender for a corner.
At the other end, Nicholas Fernandes’ curling free-kick was smartly cleared by defender Akram Yadwad at the expense of a corner.
Just three minutes into the second session, Panjim Footballers broke the deadlock.
An intelligent through pass by Lloyd Cardozo saw overlapping Chandan Gawas control and beat helpless looking keeper Luis Barreto with a neat placement to take the lead.
Manora coach Roque Carneiro used all of his three substitutions by bringing in Aditya D’Cruz, Hanslum Furtado and Jason Barbosa off the bench to bring some attack while Panjim coach Thome Alvares brought in Ashok Megheri, Vallmiky Miranda and Prasil Kankonkar to hold the defence and stick to their one goal lead.
Three minutes before the end of the regulation time, the Capital side had a chance to double their lead but Lokeshkumar Talwar fumbled inside the 6-yard box after Lloyd Cardozo had found him inside the penalty box.
