India has entered a historic chapter in its Test cricket journey as the men’s team is currently playing its 600th Test match against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. The landmark game began on Saturday, August 15, 2026, 94 years after India made its Test debut against England at Lord’s on June 25, 1932. India won the toss and opted to bat first in the historic 600th Test.
India’s journey through Test cricket has included dramatic defeats, memorable victories, legendary captains and generations of outstanding players. A total of 319 players have represented India in Tests so far, with Sachin Tendulkar holding the record for most appearances with 200 matches.

From CK Nayudu, who led India in its first Test, to Rishabh Pant and the current generation, 38 players have captained India in the format. Virat Kohli remains India’s most successful Test captain, having led the team in 68 matches between 2014 and 2022, winning 40.
India’s First Test: England vs India, Lord’s, 1932
India played its first Test against England at Lord’s from June 25 to 28, 1932. Although the Maharajah of Porbandar was initially named captain, CK Nayudu eventually took charge.
England, led by Douglas Jardine, scored 259 in their first innings after Mohammad Nissar dismissed Percy Holmes and Herbert Sutcliffe early. Nissar finished with five wickets, India’s first five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
India were bowled out for 189, giving England a 70-run lead. England then declared at 275/8, leaving India 346 to win. Despite Amar Singh’s fighting 51, India lost by 158 runs.
India’s 100th Test: Birmingham, 1967
India reached its 100th Test during the third match of its 1967 series against England at Birmingham. Led by Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, India entered the match having already lost the first two Tests.
England scored 298, with India’s four spinners taking all 10 wickets. However, India struggled badly with the bat and were dismissed for 92. Engineer top-scored with 23.
England then built a huge lead and set India 410 to win. Ajit Wadekar scored 70, but India were eventually dismissed for 277. England won by 132 runs and completed a 3-0 series sweep.
India’s 200th Test: Lahore, 1982
India’s 200th Test was played against Pakistan at Lahore in December 1982. The match ended in a draw after several impressive batting performances.
Pakistan scored 485 in their first innings, with Zaheer Abbas making a huge 215. India responded with 379, with Mohinder Amarnath scoring an unbeaten 109, Sunil Gavaskar making 81 and Sandeep Patil contributing 68 off 56 balls.
Pakistan reached 135/1 in the second innings before the match ended without a result.
India’s 300th Test: Ahmedabad, 1996
India played its 300th Test against South Africa in Ahmedabad in November 1996. The match was notable as it also marked VVS Laxman’s Test debut.
India scored 223 in the first innings, with Sachin Tendulkar making 42. South Africa took a narrow 21-run lead, but India’s bowlers fought back.
Laxman scored 51 in the second innings as India made 190. South Africa needed 170 but collapsed for 105, with Javagal Srinath taking six wickets. India won by 64 runs.
India’s 400th Test: Jamaica, 2006
India’s 400th Test came against the West Indies at Sabina Park in Jamaica. Rahul Dravid’s team secured a memorable 49-run victory.
West Indies were bowled out for 103, with Harbhajan Singh taking five wickets. India made 200, with Dravid scoring 81.
India then made 171 in the second innings, again led by Dravid, who scored 68. The West Indies needed 269 but were dismissed for 219, with Anil Kumble claiming six wickets.
India’s 500th Test: Kanpur, 2016
India’s 500th Test was played against New Zealand at Green Park in Kanpur, led by Virat Kohli.
India scored 318 in the first innings, with Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara scoring half-centuries. New Zealand were restricted to 262, giving India a 56-run lead.
India then declared at 377/5, setting New Zealand 434. Ravichandran Ashwin finished the job with six wickets as India won by 197 runs.
India went on to win the three-match series 3-0.
Galle: India’s 600th Test
India has now reached the historic milestone of playing its 600th Test, with the team taking on Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. The landmark match began on Saturday, August 15, 2026, marking another major chapter in India’s 94-year journey in Test cricket.
The Galle Test comes 94 years after India made its Test debut against England at Lord’s in 1932. India has since gone through generations of players, captains and memorable moments, eventually becoming only the third team after England and Australia to reach 600 Tests.
The historic occasion also coincides with India’s 80th Independence Day, adding another layer of significance to the milestone.
